The DoT state over 90% of tourist facilities have been damaged in southern Leyte and inspections are ongoing. A worsening humanitarian crisis also unfolds with the lack of food and clean water in many areas. Recovery efforts continue but are being hampered by poor weather, intermittent communications, impassable roads and damaged infrastructure. On The Ground Update Super Typhoon Rai (“Odette”) made landfall on Thursday, Dec. 13 at 1:30 p.m. local time and the storm was one of the strongest recorded on Earth this year and sixth to reach category 5. Tragically the loss of life exceeds 400* and will continue to rise in the coming days. Odette caused significant damage currently estimated at USD 800m* but as communications have not yet been fully restored this will rise. Ground Update Super Typhoon Rai (known as “Odette” in the Philippines) made landfall on Thursday, Dec. 16 at 1:30 p.m. local time and the storm was one of the strongest recorded on Earth this year and the sixth to reach category 5. Rai caused severe and widespread damage throughout the Southern Philippines, killing at least 400*. The typhoon was estimated to have caused at least ₱39.3* billion ($786 million) worth of damage across the Philippines.
